CHICAGO (Reuters) – Duct tape, already legendary for its many uses, can also be deployed to get rid of warts, U.S. Army researchers said on Monday.

Dean Focht of the Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington, said taping over a wart takes about a month to work. The growth is effectively suffocated, and dead tissue can then be gradually rubbed off with an emery board or pumice stone.

Placing standard adhesive tape over a wart is sometimes recommended by dermatologists and is a well-known home remedy. Duct tape, however, may be more sticky and less likely to unravel than some medical adhesive tapes.

The common wart, or verruca vulgaris, is a harmless growth caused by the papillomavirus. Warts can be contagious and annoying, but eventually will go away by themselves with the body creating an immunity.

Doctors can freeze them off with chemicals, called cryotherapy, but the treatment can scare children and may not be as permanent.

Focht had 26 subjects aged 3 to 22 years treat their warts with the duct tape method, where the growth was covered for six days then soaked with water and the dead tissue rubbed off. Twenty-five others underwent up to six treatments of cryotherapy with liquid nitrogen.

The duct tape method worked for 85 percent of the patients, while cryotherapy was effective for 60 percent.

Sticky-sided duct tape has many uses that range from patching to repairing to binding to removing nail polish.

“In our study, duct tape occlusion therapy was shown to be more effective than cryotherapy in the treatment of verruca vulgaris, and it caused few adverse effects,” Focht wrote in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, a journal published by the American Medical Association.

MARINETTE — Two railroad tanker cars derailed Friday morning in a Marinette neighborhood near the intersection of Sherman Street and State Street.

The tankers were both empty.

According to Marinette Fire Department Battalion Chief Patrick Nor, the derailed tankers would have been carrying up to 203,500 pounds of sodium hydroxide and 218,600 pounds of sodium chlorate had they been full.

With the tanks derailed, the train was stopped, stretching all the way back to 16th Street in Menominee County, leaving motorists to look for alternate routes of travel.

Railroad workers were able to move the train at Carney Boulevard, freeing up traffic, but roads north of the derailment were closed until mid-afternoon.

Nor said that cleanup from the accident could take days if the railroad company cannot find a crane locally to pick up the derailed cars.

In that case, officials would have to bring in a crane from Minnesota, Nor said.

“Luckily the tankers weren’t full, and luckily there wasn’t a fire,” said Nor. “The cars are right underneath high-tension power lines, and that would have been a real mess.”

Clark Landis, an associate professor of chemistry at UW-Madison, said that if the two chemicals had mixed, it would not have been hazardous.

“Basically you’re mixing a bleaching agent with a base,” said Landis. “There shouldn’t be a reaction between the two of them.”

Both chemicals are used in the production of paper.

A man at the scene who refused to be identified said that the derailment “shook” his house. He added that the trains have been a nuisance in the past, because of the noise they cause.

“They should take these trains and move them out of the city, all they do is cause problems,” he said. “They should figure out how to bypass the city. All the neighbors who live by the tracks can’t stand them.”
