Okay, I am going to provide this mini-tutorial for those around here who want to reset their comment ids to managable numbers. Some themes, such as this, display the comment id, and blogs that have been bitten by spam may benefit from this. No real improvements in performance or anything, just the feeling of lower numbers.

First, I’m going to assume that you have PhpMyAdmin or know how to send commands to mysql on your server.

Second, run Spam Nuker by Chris J Davis (link if you don’t have it already)

In the database that you store wordpress in, run these 2 queries.

ALTER TABLE `wp_comments` DROP `comment_ID`; ALTER TABLE `wp_comments` ADD `comment_ID` BIGINT( 20 ) UNSIGNED DEFAULT '0' NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT PRIMARY KEY FIRST;
